Load album review:
Overall impression:
For many, this is the album which started the decline of Metallica. I however, do not belong to that group of people. It seems also that you can not consider yourself a true Metallica fan, if you don't hate this album and love Master of Puppets. If this is true, then I am not a true Metallica fan, and gladly admit it. To me, Load is much more important Metallica album than Master of Puppets can ever be. One of the main reasons is that Load was the first Metallica album that got my attention when I was fifteen years old. It was the album that made Metallica my favorite band. I admit that it is not the most cohesive album and it also contains some of the worst Metallica tracks ever recorded. But still it contains James Hetfield's singing at its best. So, to me, Load is the second most important album of Metallica, only the Black Album being even more important and better.
The best track:
The album is full of excellent heavy metal tracks. But a couple of them rise above the other tracks, and they are "King Nothing" and "Thorn Within". I know that especially "Thorn Within" may seem quite an odd decision but I just love the heavy but very beautiful melodies sang by the front man James Hetfield. Also the song harmonies sound wonderful. Lars Ulrich's drumming is also very interesting and strange in a good way. "King Nothing" is the more obvious choice for a best track on the album. I think it is an excellent song and also contains one of the best riffs ever written by Metallica. The riff is the one that starts the whole song, first played by Jason Newsted and his bass guitar, and then the guitars join in. It's so heavy and so groovy, just massive and brilliant.
The worst track:
This album contains the two worst track so far in the Metallica's recording career. Unfortunately the albums released in the 2000's contain even worse tracks, but that's another story. I think that the tracks "Cure" and "Wasting My Hate" could have been dropped off from the whole album. Actually, if they would have been dropped off, the album would be a lot more cohesive and consistent. Another quite a weak track on the album is "Poor Twisted Me" which is an odd little creature. But it has its moments whereas especially "Cure" is just pure agony to listen.
The best line of lyrics:
The best line of lyrics for me on this album is the second verse of "King Nothing": "Hard and cold, bought and sold, a heart as hard as cold". This line just has an excellent rhythm in it and James Hetfield also sings it brilliantly. The lyrics on this track in general are really strong and meaningful to me.
